Large scale art for the new D’ORE store.

Owen Kessel, who has the new D’ORE account asked us for an artist who could do some large scale artwork for the new D’ORE store opening in Sandton Square. We got Jessie Doucha & her assistant Lenny Dee Doucha working on this project. It took place over 4 days and Jessie did a fantastic job using charcoal & string as her medium. This is the second school that we have had the opportunity to work with part of the Virgin Active Future Crew Project. Claire Homewood and Sergio Rinquist have been doing workshops with the kids from BishopLavis high school. Here are some images of the mural that is being painted as a result of these workshops. PUBLIC ART: A RIGHT OR A PRIVILEGE?

Ambre Nicolson from Creative Cape Town asked me for a quote for an article on whether public art is a right or a privilege. Read the Article here.

Recently we have experience some more bureaucracy in Cape Town which has made it really difficult for artists to paint / create here. I have submitted a number of permit applications only to be shot down, due to changing policies, scared politicians, various groups who are close-minded and just dont understand the value of public art. Public art is not illegal if you have a permit, but its almost imposible to get a permit.

I received this info from Arts & Culture yesterday
These are the two documents which are currently under way and the timings on them.
a. Art and Cultural Policy
b. Public Art Regulatory Framework
The former will be ready for public participation in the 4th quarter of 2013 and the latter will be ready for review and comment by the public at the 2013 ways to do Public Art exhibition to be held at the City Hall at the end of June.

This is way too late to get anything going for Design Capital 2014. And in the meantime its getting harder and harder to get permits. As it stands there has already been an absolute stop on all public art in the Seapoint, Greenpoint, Mouille Point area, which already has very little as it is.

Freeworld Design Centre – Mak1one & Our Awesome Work

Freeworld Design Centre, invited Mak1one to do an installation in one of their pod exhibitions. It was part of the launch for Sharp Sharp, a South African Street Culture Photo Book by Ed Suter. Babysoft sculpture for Ogilvy JHB

We were recently approached by Ogilvy JHB to create an interactive sculpture for Baby Soft. The amazing team consisted Daniel Popper & Angela Mac Pherson.

Both experts in sculpture and puppet making, they created two 8ft high sculptures out of toilet rolls. One of the was interactive with moving arms and legs. Check out the pictures below.

All five NY Art Boards are looking incredible!! Auction date is set for Saturday 18th August, 6 – 8pm at the Hoops 4 Hope Summer Benefit in the Hamptons. We are hoping to raise money for the Isiqalo Foundation & Hoops4Hope
