Strand Street Crossing

At the intersection of Strand Street and St George’s Mall, one of Cape Town’s busiest pedestrian corridors has been transformed through a large-scale floral crossing intervention designed to bring joy, visibility and care into the public realm.

Created as a tactical urbanism project for The Mission for Inner City Cape Town, the crossing reimagines everyday infrastructure as an opportunity for creativity, safety and human connection within the city.

The custom daisy-inspired artwork was designed by Heather Moore of Skinny laMinx and painted with the team from Cape Town Sign Writing during an early-morning installation in the city centre.

More than a visual intervention, the project was created to highlight pedestrians, calm traffic and encourage slower, more mindful movement through the Inner City. By introducing bold colour and playful pattern into the streetscape, the crossing shifts the emotional experience of the space, turning a routine intersection into something more welcoming, memorable and people-focused.

Produced by Shani Judes through SJ Artists, the project reflects an ongoing interest in how small-scale public interventions can contribute to larger conversations around walkability, public safety and urban identity in Cape Town.

The project was brought to life through collaboration, teamwork and a shared belief that thoughtful design can meaningfully reshape how we experience our cities.

We wash the road before.
