A bold typographic mural activates Roodehek Street by Bazil Baxter & Ben Johnston
At 9 Roodehek Street in Gardens, Cape Town, a new large-scale mural titled YOU AND ME has transformed the side of a city building into a bold typographic artwork exploring connection, community and shared urban space.

Spanning approximately 90 square metres, the mural was created by Cape Town mural artist and sign painter Bazil Baxter in collaboration with internationally recognised typographic artist Ben Johnston. Built around a simple but universal phrase, YOU AND ME turns typography into an immersive visual experience. Through dimensional lettering, layered forms and vibrant colour, the work explores the relationships between people, public space and the evolving identity of the city itself.
The collaboration brings together two distinct approaches to typography and mural-making. Baxter’s precision-driven sign painting and deep understanding of lettering within urban environments intersects with Johnston’s sculptural, experimental typographic style, creating a mural that shifts between language, image and architecture depending on where you stand.
Produced by Shani Judes through SJ Artists, the project forms part of an ongoing initiative to help reactivate Roodehek Street as a growing inner-city art corridor, bringing together artists, local businesses and public space through large-scale contemporary mural work.
The mural was made possible through the support of Pizza Warehouse & The Dog’s Bollocks at Yard, Plantify and The Mission for Inner City Cape Town, alongside the support of the building owner, tenants and staff.
